What Is CARRIT?

CARRIT is the Court and Realtime Reporting Internet Training program that is being offered through Alfred State College to teach the art and skill of court reporting via the World Wide Web.  The program is a new and innovative way of answering the need for qualified court and realtime reporters by offering a degree program to students who cannot attend a college campus environment.  It is designed for working people who want to study in their own home, for a parent who cannot leave home and family, and for students attending other colleges that do not offer court reporting as a major.

The CARRIT program is part of the Court and Realtime Reporting curriculum offered at Alfred State College.  Internet students must complete the same requirements as those attending the college in order to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree.  This is accomplished by completing course requirements in one of three ways:  traditionally, by transfer, and by Internet.

Traditional courses are those courses taken by students who attend our campus and complete the requirements for each course.  Transfer credit is given for courses taken at other colleges.  Credit may be given for courses that have already been completed and meet the standards for required course work.  Transfer credit is also given for courses that are taken after enrolling in the program at Alfred State College.  These courses must be approved by Alfred State prior to registration in order to ensure they will be accepted as courses that meet our requirements.  The Internet courses are those courses that are offered at Alfred State College via the Internet.

The Court and Realtime curriculum is a two-year course that leads to an Associate in Applied Science degree.  All degree requirements as outlined in the official college catalog and student handbook must be adhered to.  In addition to all other requirements, students must earn a minimum of 30 hours through Alfred State College.  The CARRIT program allows students to complete 30+ credit hours of courses over a two-year period.

More information regarding the CARRIT program admissions, financial aid, and other questions that you might have can be obtained by going directly to the Alfred State College home page at www.alfredstate.edu.  Select the admissions or academic program links to get more information.  You may also go to the Alfred State College Court Reporting home page at http://carrit.alfredstate.edu/infostart/info1.htm or contact Professor Melissa Blake at blakemj@alfredstate.edu

This period of transition began with the Fall 2003 entrants and will continue until Spring of 2004 by which time all new course development will have been transitioned in.  The changes in the curriculum allow for the students to choose the option of judicial reporting or broadcast captioning in their senior year level (third and fourth semesters).  All students enrolled prior to Fall 2003 follow the curriculum sheet at that time.

*Alfred State College remains committed to the goal of offering as many of the required courses on line as possible.  Each year we increase the number of required on-line classes.  Some of the classes listed in this column may not be offered every semester; it is best to check with the Records Office for complete listing of on-line courses offered each semester.

**Courses previously taken at other colleges will be accepted based upon a course description of the course in comparison with the ASC course.  Course descriptions should be submitted along with official transcripts.  Courses taken at other colleges to be transferred in while attending ASC must receive prior approval by submitting course description and the name of school where course will be completed.

NOTE—a good source for selecting other Internet courses offered by colleges is the State University of New York Learning Network (SLN) http://www.sln.suny.edu

Student Access to CARRIT Coursework on the Internet

Typical Class Structure for CARRIT Students

1.     Students access our http://blackboard.alfredstate.edu site and read the course information, course documents, announcements, and weekly or daily assignments.  This information may be printed

2.     Students practice from their lesson book and listen to dictation from a CD ROM that is supplied to them or they download the dictation from our CARRIT site at http://carrit.alfredstate.edu

3.     All material that is practiced is saved to the student’s hard drive using the specialized software program.  This homework (practice material) is then sent to the instructor every week for grading

4.     Tests and speed takes are downloaded/audio streamed from a testing link in the CARRIT site.  All speed takes are time stamped to assure the time factor is accurate.  Students must also sign a certificate of verification with witness signature verifying that they completed test on their own.

5.     Questions are asked via email to the professors.

6.     Students have access to discussion boards for court reporting students.
